What is Editorial Wedding Photography – Really?
Editorial has become one of the most overused words in wedding photography.
Scroll Instagram for five minutes and you’ll see it everywhere – flash-heavy portraits, serious expressions, a whiff of Vogue, and suddenly everything is “editorial.”
I’ve been saying I shoot editorial weddings for years. Long before it became a default hashtag.
So let’s define it properly.
Because it isn’t a preset. It isn’t just direct flash.
And it definitely isn’t just asking someone not to smile.
For me, editorial wedding photography means creating images that look like they belong in a campaign.

What I Mean When I Say Editorial
When I say editorial, I’m thinking about Vogue. About Harper’s Bazaar. About those first twenty pages of adverts before you even get to the features.
The jewellery campaigns.
The perfume ads.
The sharply cut tailoring.
The impossible lighting.
The way a woman holds herself when she knows she looks good.
That is my inspiration.
Not because I want your wedding to look like a fashion shoot. But because I want you to look like you belong in one.
Editorial wedding photography, to me, is conscious image-making.
It’s line.
It’s structure.
It’s posture.

It’s noticing how your sleeve falls.
How your veil moves in the wind.
How your suit sharpens your shoulders.

Even if you can’t quite name it.
A technically perfect image that stirs nothing? Not interested. An image with fashion and feeling? That’s the balance.

Let’s talk about outfits. Because yes — they matter.
An editorial image is helped enormously by what you wear.
A couture dress with sculptural detail? A sharply tailored suit? Dramatic volume? Intentional styling?
Big yes.
A standard, safe choice that prioritises comfort over fashion?
We can still create beautiful images – absolutely. But they won’t carry the same visual weight.
That’s not judgement. That’s physics.
That said — you have to feel good. You must wear the dress, not the other way round. Confidence collapses the second you feel restricted or not yourself.
Fabric, tailoring and proportion affect silhouette.
Silhouette affects posture. Posture affects presence.

Movement vs Poise
Editorial doesn’t mean stiff.
Some of my favourite images have movement….wind through a veil, a turn of the body, a walk towards light.
Stillness can be powerful.
Movement can be electric.
The point is intention.
Sometimes the image is caught mid-moment. Sometimes we step away for five minutes and build something quietly.
Both are valid. Both are real. Both can feel like art.
And yes – some of these images genuinely could hang in your home without anyone knowing they were taken at a wedding.

Not every wedding day lends itself to a full editorial treatment – and that’s completely fine!
If you’re having a barefoot, hippy, festival-in-a-field celebration, I’m still here for it. I love it.
But I’ll shoot it differently.
