I’m a recommended wedding photographer at Claridge’s, and they book me directly. I’ve said yes every time!
It’s the building I know best in London and the one I’d choose if you made me pick – art deco, mirrored, black-and-white marble underfoot. But the thing people underestimate is that it’s a working hotel first. That’s exactly why it feels the way it does, and it’s the whole reason it’s a joy to photograph.
How I work at Claridge’s
Claridge’s is a hotel before it’s a venue, and that’s rather the point of it. Guests are staying there, paying for exactly the discretion you’ve come for yourself. So I don’t ask anyone to move. If a corridor is busy we wait, or we go somewhere else – and there is always somewhere else. Flash isn’t always the right call for the same reason, and in truth these rooms rarely need it.
On the day I’ll usually be with your coordinator, who’ll tell me where we can go and when to move on. That isn’t a restriction – it’s a large part of why the hotel feels the way it does. The staff here treat every guest like family, and that extends to how a wedding day gets looked after. I work quickly, stay out of the way, and know the building well enough that I’m not working anything out on your time.
Photographing weddings at Claridge’s
The Suites
Most of my mornings here have started in one, and no two are the same. Proper daylight, proper space, elegnt & grand. Room to work without anyone standing on anyone.
the ballroom
Every bit as grand as it sounds, and it has its own entrance. Caitlin and Freddie had their wedding breakfast and speeches in there and it remains one of the best rooms I’ve worked in. It’s full of mirrors, which I love and which mean there’s a great deal to keep track of — it rewards knowing the room before you walk into it. The job is to hold on to the ambience and the grandeur, not flatten them with light.
the corridors
Iconic, and everybody wants them — rightly. Caitlin got ready at the hotel and we had time, so we used them properly. The one hung with the David Downton drawings is my favourite thing in the building. It takes a touch of flash to hold the colour, and it’s worth the trouble every single time. Fun and grand at once, which is a difficult combination to find anywhere.
the french salon
I’ve photographed both a wedding breakfast and a party in here. Gemma and Chris married upstairs one year and came back the next for a party in the French Salon, with the Drawing Room given over to the children — a lovely piece of planning, and it worked beautifully. Louise and James had their party in here too, after their wedding breakfast next door.
The drawing room
Next door to the French Salon and off the same corridor, which makes the pair of them work together properly – you can move a whole day between the two without anyone going far. Louise and James had their wedding breakfast in here. I’ve also photographed it laid out as a reception room with a grand piano in, and it’s a room I’d happily shoot every week.
mezzanine spaces
The intimate rooms on the mezzanine level, where Gemma and Chris were married. Small, and none the lesser for it – if you’re having a very short guest list, this is where it happens, and it doesn’t feel like a compromise for a second.
painters room
Small and stylish, and honestly better for it. Brogan and Tom had drinks in there, intimate and full of character. It opened up the David Downton corridor for us at the same time. They came back later in the evening for dancing.
the foyer
Art deco private dining room. The back of the restaurant, and very intimate. Accommodates 10 -24 guests. Stunning but has to be shot right to capture the warmth and feel. You have to blend, and shoot in a way that keeps the intimacy rather than breaking it. One of my favourite rooms in London and genuinely where I’d chose to have my own celebration. I adore it.
